Standard Glamping Tent

A safari tent for up to four above the Naranjo River, with a real bed, a ceiling fan and a private hot shower.

You fall asleep to the sound of the water and wake up to the birds.

The Standard Glamping Tent at Chorro Ecolodge is a safari-style tent for up to four guests on the Naranjo River, about 35 minutes from Manuel Antonio.

Inside, it feels more like a bedroom than a campsite: a queen bed, a single and a trundle, real mattresses and a ceiling fan. Your private bathroom is a few steps outside, and the hot shower looks through the leaves to the rapids below. Guests call the toilet "the loo with a view."

A stone path leads down to our own waterfall and swimming hole. Back up the hill are the open-air kitchen, a yoga platform above the treetops and a fire pit.

For dinner, walk about 100 yards to our neighbor Doña Luz, who cooks Costa Rican food on a wood-burning stove. Plenty of guests are back at her table the next night.

Who it's for

Couples, small families and friends who want a night in the rainforest without giving up comfort. Kids love the pool below the falls and the rocks around it, and families have stayed with children as young as three. For a group of five or six, try the Family Glamping Tent, or book the whole lodge.

Good to know

  • Bring a flashlight for the path to the bathroom at night. The toilet is a composting one.
  • This is the rainforest. Evenings are warm, and you will meet insects and the odd frog. The fan helps, and so does bug spray.
  • The Naranjo never stops talking. Light sleepers can pack earplugs; most guests say the sound is the best part.
  • Arrive before dark. The last mile or so is gravel, fine for a regular car, and there are steps down from the parking area.
  • No meals are included. Bring groceries for the shared kitchen.
  • Cell signal is patchy. Take care of anything important before you arrive.
  • In the rainy months the current can run too high for a swim, and you may have the lodge to yourselves.
  • Check-in 3:00 p.m., check-out 11:00 a.m.

Good to know before you book

How far is Chorro Ecolodge from Manuel Antonio and Quepos?

About 35 minutes by car from Manuel Antonio, a little less from Quepos, and about 4 hours from the San José airport. A regular car is fine; the last mile or so is gravel. There is parking on site, and we can arrange transfers.

What is the difference between glamping and camping here?

You sleep in a safari tent on real beds with linens, electricity and a ceiling fan, with your own bathroom and hot shower a few steps away. You still hear the river and the frogs all night, which is the point.

Is it good for kids?

Yes. Families with children from three to their teens stay with us, and the river, the waterfall pool, the hammocks and the fire pit keep them busy. The Family Glamping Tent sleeps six.

Can we swim in the river and the waterfall?

Yes. In the dry months the river has calm pools, and the swimming hole below the falls is a two-minute walk from the tents. After heavy rain the current can run too high; we will tell you where it is safe.

Are meals included?

No. There is a shared open-air kitchen, and the Family tent has its own small fridge. Our neighbor Doña Luz cooks Costa Rican breakfasts and dinners at her house next door; let us know ahead.
